The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Yeah, it's an unwieldy title.

Anyone who knows me well (and plenty who don't) is aware that I believe in the power and value of intercessory prayer (prayer on behalf of another) and good vibrations. I think in a community such as Chicklit, it is natural for us to share our difficulties and we have many places and ways for people to ask for help, support and advice on this board. Here's one more, one that's been overlooked too long -- tygrkatt's post in another thread made me realize it.

Please feel free to ask for intercessory prayers and good vibrations in this thread. It doesn't have to be for something tragic or dramatic -- maybe you need extra help to get a job, or find your missing dog, or keep from completely losing it and screaming at someone you love. Maybe you're at the breaking point, or maybe you can see it on the horizon. Whatever. I know members of the community here will gladly provide intercessory prayers and/or good vibrations as requested. (I'm pretty sure we've got practically every religion and flavour of secularism covered, too.)

I'm very pleased to have finally been moved to create this thread.

Thanks, StephA. We're lucky to be on the west side of Florida, so we are only supposed to get a lot of rain and tropical storm level winds. Central Florida may end up getting hurt the worst since they're the folks who are most likely going to have deal with damage from both Charley and Frances. Lots of thoughts and prayers are needed there.

I think this is a great thread too. Chicklit is already such a supportive environment; it's nice to have a place to specifically share our needs.

My heart and thoughts since yesterday are with the families of the victims of the terrorist attempt in Russia. (There are days when I feel ashamed to belong to the human race). I want to ask everyone here to say a prayer or keep a minute of silence for those children.

In my head today is a song by Sting that says: “The Russians love their children too…”

GVs to Floridians, Georgians and folks in the Carribbean while surviving yet another hurricane. I really hope this is the last one.

If I could ask for some IPGVs for my dad; he's been having symptoms that are often associated with colo-rectal or prostate cancer, and even though he's not worried, I am, and so is my mom. He's in the process of getting it all checked out, and I hope everything will be okay, but a little extra help couldn't hurt.

Word, beastiegirl. I can't imagine being lashed with one hurricane, never mind one after another.

And lots of IPs & GVs for your dad. I've been reading tons of stuff about colonic health these days and have been doing visualizations to support what I'm learning, so I'll include him in those exercises.

I just want to add one thing: I don't know if it makes any difference to anyone else, but I find it easier and more effective to pray for someone or visualize on their behalf if I at least have their first name. I understand that people may not always want to provide that information, but when they don't mind, I'd love to have it.

Lots of thoughts to your dad beastiegirl, mine had a quintuple bypass a few years ago and I well remember how scary it was having a parent seriously ill.

We're doing ok, thanks for asking. One thing we've gotten out of the experience is a renewed apperciation of friends, so we've been spending as much time as possible with the people we care about. It still strikes me as so very wrong to be in a group of our friends and he's just not there, but overall, we're doing good.

Moderators, please feel free to delete this post if you don't think it's appropriate for this thread.

As many of you know, a very important U.S. presidential election is coming up in ten days. As I posted over in News & Views, I attended a "Get Out the Vote" meeting today and learned about various underhanded attempts that are being made to disenfranchise voters. It's scary and sad that this kind of thing is happening in a country that is supposed to be a model of democracy.

Therefore, I would like to make a request for good vibrations and prayers from other chickliterati across the globe: that on Election Day (Nov. 2) all eligible voters are permitted to vote, that every vote counts and is counted, that no one is disenfranchised, and that the true will of the American people is done.

Thank you!

I have a special request for the Chickliterati. Last Nov. 12, my sister-in-law Alli and her husband Jay learned that their baby girl was stillborn (on her due date, no less). Kathryn Alicia was delivered in the wee hours of Nov. 13, and buried a few days later. This weekend is going to be excruciatingly hard for my family, especially Alli, and I know we would all appreciate some intercessory prayers and/or good vibrations.

On a happier note, I'd also like to request IPGVs for my friends Quaiser and Fatima, who were able to bring their son Quaasim home from the hospital today after four months in the NICU (Quaasim was born quite prematurely). If you are so inclined, please send some happy thoughts their way.

Many thanks!

I have a request for a man I don't even know, but can't stop thinking about: Marc* Woerlen, whose pregnant wife and all seven children were killed in a house fire in Ontario this week . His entire family, gone like that. I cannot imagine the horrific pain and suffering this man must be in, and I start crying every time I think about it. All indications are that he has a strong faith himself and the community is definitely rallying around him, but I'm absolutely sure he (and his remaining relatives) could use any prayers & good vibrations people can spare for him.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I need to ask for some prayers & vibes: I've spent nearly every minute of the last four days in degrees of dental pain ranging from uncomfortable to excruciating (most of it closer to the latter end) and apparently I need another damn root canal. It's currently scheduled for Thursday, but I'm also weighing the option of extraction & implant/bridge/other appliance. I would appreciate any prayers and good vibes I can get, first of all, to be guided to the right decision, and second, for speedy and effective recovery and healing, and a minimum of pain* and complications, whatever I decide. Thank you!

*please bear in mind that taking painkillers, antiobiotics and any other meds is not an option for me, so I have to get through this ordeal with nothing other than local anaesthetic, homeopathic remedies and complementary therapies. So I really need all the spiritual support I can get...

Sophiejte I'm so sorry; and good luck with the dental work, Deborah.

I'm looking for some prayers and GV's for our secretary, Sushi. Her father passed away a few hours ago and she's taking it really badly. She's such a giving person too, and never stops to think about what she needs - she spent the time immediately after receiving the news trying to finish her urgent work so that she wouldn't inconvenience us. So selfless.

Please also send some prayers and gv's through to Sushi's mother, who recently re-connected with her husband. They were closer now than they'd been before in their marriage. I'm worried that she may not be able to cope with losing her husband.

One more (sorry, I'm asking for a lot today) - Sushi and her husband Kevin are driving down to her parents' home tonight - about four hours away. The weather is terrible - it's been raining all day, and the roads are full of crazy holiday drivers. Please send some prayers and gv's their way in order that they may have a safe trip. Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Thanks, LaSalleUGirl. The procedure went fairly well, though it was protracted and unpleasant, and the dentist was only able to put a temporary filling in, so I still have to go back again next week for the permanent filling. Oy. But let me tell you all, the homeopathic stuff has been doing wonders. Since the root canal, I've been taking magnesia phosphorica for the jaw stiffness/soreness and alternating ruta graveolens and arnica montana for the pain, and I'm having much less pain and soreness than is normal for me after similar procedures of shorter duration and less complexity. I'm also doing mouthwashes with tincture of salvia officinalis (and alternating with rinses of water/sea salt). Using all these remedies at once isn't exactly good, classic homeopathic practice, but I have to do what I can. Because of the fracture in my tooth we still have to wait and see that it heals up well, which is why the permanent filling has to wait. I believe the prayers and blessings and good wishes of people for me have helped enormously too, and I will appreciate continued effort on that front.

And I've been praying for Uncle Jim and Sushi and her family.

Mine, too. We're watching the news here, and it's just appalling. The official estimate is that 12,500 people have died, which probably means more than twice that number. Many of those deaths could have been prevented if there had been an official alert system in the region.

Please consider donating money to the aid agencies that have already mobilised in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Thailand, and the other affected countries; or if that's not possible by donating your time to these charities.

This was the largest earthquake in the world since 1968, and it caused damage as far away as the east African coast.

According to CNN.com, the death toll from the south Asian disaster is up to 71,000, and, as TraceyB noted, that's before the lack of food, water, and shelter add to the loss of life. I just saw on Amazon's homepage that they're offering a one-click way to donate to the Red Cross, if anyone is interested. They're claiming that 100% of the donation will go straight to the American Red Cross. If anyone in the U.S. wants a fairly easy way to follow through on PrimulaMary's suggestion for donations, this might be the way to go.

I am certainly traumatized by the rising death tolls and destruction in South Asia; I've read that the Red Cross estimates an eventual figure of 100,00 from the tsunamis alone, and as has been noted here, disease and other factors will only increase it. I have a request myself today. If you've got the time and inclination, please send some GVs to my husband's grandmother. She's been hospitalized since Tuesday because of a urinary tract infection and some mysterious condition that is causing all the sodium in her body to just drain right out ~ the result is extreme weakness (and, if anyone has the slightest idea what might be causing that, please e-mail me!). We went to visit her last night, and the situation does not look good. I know we'd all appreciate a little extra goodwill on her behalf. Many thanks!

Good vibes to all the travelers, and i will keep StephA's uncle and aunt and LaSalleUBoy's grandmother in mind and send GVs to them.

If anyones has any spare GVs to send to the west coast of the US, Mr.M's father was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer (to add insult to injury, the diagnosis came the same day his mother died). It looks like an early catch, and he should be just fine, but any spare GVs can't hurt.

Requesting good vibes and prayers for my mom - she had emergency surgery to fix a detached retina two weeks ago. I spoke with her yesterday, and she still has almost no vision in that eye. She said that the horrible swelling and the pain are almost gone, fortunately. We're hopeful that this is just a matter of time - the surgery involved quite a bit of trauma, as you might expect - but I'd appreciate any good thoughts you can spare.

LaSalleUGirl, CaitlinM, and TraceyB, how are your relatives doing? Please let us know.

And Difficult Child, what a depressing situation to be in. I'm glad you were able to hold on to your position, though.

My request isn't life or death -- well, I suppose it could be, if I drove poorly enough. I am taking my road test later today. If I pass it means I will be able to drive on my own. I need some IPs & GVs not only to do well on the test (which it looks like I'll have to take in the rain that's forecast for this afternoon), but also so that my rustbucket car will pass muster with the tester. I've tried to ensure that everything's in good working order and that it meets up to the standards expected, but late on Saturday, the oil light came on. There's plenty of oil and I just had an oil change quite recently, and we can't figure out what the problem is with the oil pressure. Nor is there time to get it to a mechanic before the test. So I'm hoping the tester won't notice or care. The other thing is, my rear defogger doesn't always work that well.

So I could use a little help. I've had two practice tests with my driving instructor and got 90% and 92% in that order, so I'm reasonably confident going in. I just want to get this over with, and not do something stupid like drive through a stop sign (an automatic failure). Thanks!

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Deborah, good vibes headed your way on the driving test! I remember how nerve-wracking it was. Also, there may be nothing at all to fret about concerning the oil light. My last car's oil light used to come on for unknown reasons - it was unrelated to the oil pressure, oil level, or anything else we considered, including phases of the moon. The car was just old and the sensors got wonky.

Thanks for asking about my mom. She is going in for an additional procedure today, a vitrectomy. There is a lot of stuff floating around in her eye, and her vision is not improving as quickly as her doctor would like. So, they're going to drain the fluid, and the eye will make new, clear fluid. It is a much less invasive and traumatic procedure than the first operation, and the doctor says she should have vision improvement by the end of the week. I hope so, she's going nuts not being able to drive herself around.

Good vibes to Difficult Child and her colleagues in a difficult time, to Deborah for a smooth and calm road test today, and to TraceyB's mom for a quick recovery and better vision soon.

Deborah, thanks for asking about my relatives. My cousins seem to be coping well - I saw them in person a few weeks ago - though one has a lot on his plate settling my uncle's estate, since his financial matters are in some dissaray. Mr. M's father seems to be doing okay after his mother's death, and has also been working on settling her estate, and is in good health and confident aboout the success of his treatments, which is good enough for me, since he's a retired surgeon.

Deborah, I'm glad all the good vibes (and practice) paid off -- congrats on passing the driving test.

Thanks for asking about LaSalleUBoy's grandmother. Her condition stabilized, though they never figured out exactly what was causing in the first place. (Thanks to Orlando, however, I learned that the condition itself was called hyponatremia, and her suggestions at least helped us narrow down what it wasn't.) She is now recovering and regaining her strength in a rehab center. It'll be a long process, but she's improving. Thanks very much to everybody for the GVs!

I'm leaning towards going back to school to get my Masters and teaching certification in early childhood education, with the eventual goal of being a music teacher for toddlers and/or preschool kids. In the meantime, I think I want to do some part-time work, preferably in a related field, while I focus on researching and applying to schools. In one way, this all seems very sudden, but in another way, I think it's where my life has been leading all along. If you have some good vibes to spare, of the job, school, or (gag) "quarter-life crisis" variety, I'd appreciate if you'd send a few my way.

From my post above in March, my brother did not make it. He was in a coma when I arrived that night, and died shortly after, when they turned off the life support. I am (was?) one of 8 children, and I had no idea what a physical blow it would be to lose a sibling. And watching my parents' pain... I am blessed with an amazing family and friends, but it's just so hard and still hits me at the most unexpected times.

Bear, I'm so sorry about your friend. I hope his daughter is doing alright, although really I can't imagine what that would be for her right now. A very wise friend of mine said you never 'get over' the loss of someone you love, but you do learn to live with it and find small ways to honor them.

Sympathies to all who have lost someone.

My grandad had a stroke last Saturday. Not a bad one but even minor strokes are bad, eh? I was meant to be going to see him today but have been told not to as we are a huge family and he is getting agitated as he gets more compus mentis and the hospital staff are getting annoyed with all the family traipsing in and out.

I haven't seen him in a while and I am so scared for him and for my nanna - they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary earlier this year and I don't think she would last long without him. But he's 82, and although he is doing comparatively well (critical but stable), he's still in a life-threatening situation. Please keep all of us in your thoughts and prayers.

blueberry - fortunately the family got electricity back the weekend after Katrina hit. However, there's still a lot to deal with for them, as there are now tons of people in the area who were evacuated from New Orleans. It's taking almost two hours for Michelle to get to work.
There are still problems getting food and necessary items - trucks have difficulties getting to the stores in the first place, and then people stockpile what they can, so within a few hours, all that the trucks bring in is gone. If they don't hit the store at the right time, too bad. They do have friends in other states, though, who are great about sending food and supplies. So they are making it, but please still keep them and everyone else in the area in your thoughts.

We're certain that he'll be OK (we have enough evidence of his innocence and enough leverage against her and her business to end any dispute), but it's tearing apart the family and has us at wits end. It had already hit rock-bottom this summer when he quit (our apartment had been in the business's building and she had the locks changed so that we couldn't get our stuff to move out) and I didn't think it could hit any lower, but it has.

Anyhow, sorry for such a long explanation. All I'm hoping for is some IPGVs for our sanity and maybe in another year or ten I'll be asking for some IPGVs to help our family heal.

I'm posting to request lots of intercessory prayers and good vibrations for our host here at Chicklit, Deborah, who fell and broke her wrist this weekend. She's in a lot of pain and could use any good thoughts you can spare right now.

Messages here rather than in email would be better, since typing one-handed is much harder. It wasn't the wrist of her dominant hand, but it's still painful and difficult.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about the wrist, Deborah, hope it heals soon.

I always forget there's a prayer/goodvibes thread here at Chicklit ... the only other site where I post actively is primarily religious in nature so I always remember to post that kind of thing there but not here. But a couple of things are on my mind today so...

...for my friend Gail, having surgery for breast cancer this morning,

...for my good friend J. and his wife M. who are at a very painful crossroads in their marriage,

...and for all my students (I teach in an alternative school for young adults who've dropped out of high school and want to finish up) ... they face so many struggles, but today I'm thinking particularly of two young men, D. and P., who are having difficulty staying in school, largely (I think) because of alcohol-related problems...

For all these, any prayers and good wishes you can send will be most welcome.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Many thanks to all of you for your prayers & good vibes. My wrist is pretty badly broken and the last few days have been a medical nightmare. I have a cast from my knuckles to the middle of my bicep and at least four pins in my wrist -- which are freaking painful. I can feel one of them constantly. However, my surgeon told Frink that the surgery went as well as could be expected and I attribute that as much to the prayers & GVs that I know were coming my way as to his skill. And you gotta love his name: Dr. Armstrong. I'm definitely taking that as a good omen.

I'm trying to work on a journal entry with all the sordid details but it will probably take me a few days to get it up, with the one-handed typing and all. I would be grateful for your continued support and prayers.

TrudyJ, your friends and students will be in my prayers.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I don't normally ask for stuff like this, but two weeks ago, my mother's husband had half his liver taken out in surgery. It was biopsied, and he's got liver cancer - not sure what kind yet, but there's no good kind with that type. I thought; cancer, yeah, but he's in his 50's, healthy as a horse, he'll get over it. Except - he's still in hospital. He hasn't been able to eat a thing in 2 weeks, he's depressed and in a lot of pain. He keeps reacting badly to the antibiotics and painkillers, and he keeps losing weight when he doesn't have any to lose - he was very skinny to begin with.

The weird thing is, I don't even like this guy. I was angry when my mom married him. But my mom isn't doing so good right now, either, and since we already have everyone we know in 'real' life praying for him, I thought, maybe the Chickliterai will be the thing that pushes him over the edge, and back into healing mode. (of course, as soon as he recovers from surgery, he starts with radiation and chemo, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.)

Ekaterina, I hope the doctors can get a grip on your mother's husband's health problems, and I'll pray for your whole family.

I have another request, but it's not for me. It's for ragdoll, who might not necessarily post in this thread, but could use our IPs & GVs: she and her husband came home the night before last to find they\'d been robbed blind . I know it's a long shot for her to get any of her family jewellery back but since my mother died young too, and her wedding/engagement rings are now mine and one of the few tangible links I have to her, I feel ragdoll's pain very keenly, and maybe some prayers would help improve the odds of finding her belongings.

Finally: Frannie, glad you passed your test! Yay! And it's not really a huge problem that I can't take my G2 exit test for a while; I think the only thing that would change is that I would no longer be required to maintain a 0.0% blood alcohol level and since I do not drink anyway, who cares? I'll take it in a few months when my wrist is better.

I'm posting to request good thoughts for my grandfather, who is 85 and suffering from Parkinson's. He was living independently at home, but suffered a setback a couple of weeks ago and has been in the hospital, a nursing home, and now back to the hospital since. He has lost his ability to move independently (even to turn in bed) and to feed himself, and now has sepsis. He is miserable, and honestly I know he would rather die. This terribly cruel disease is robbing him of the vitality and dignity that he has had all his life. I feel terribly guilty, because I can't visit right now (the nurses at the hospital recommended that a baby not be brought in because of the infections on the ward, and her health is too important). My mother is bearing the great burden of watching her father wishing for death and suffering hideously. Any thoughts you can spare for our famiy would be much appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather, cat. I'm sending good thoughts his way (and yours).

Sureshot and Setara, please let us know how you loved ones are doing.

I'd appreciate any good thoughts myself. Tomorrow, I'm getting tested for HIV/AIDS following the assault I mentionned earlier in the thread. I'm terrified.

Hopefully, I'll have good news to report soon.

This is not for me but for a close friend of mine and her family who could really use some IPGV right about now.

Her older brother (37) was admitted to the ICU last night with respiratory problems and he is now unconscious. This is the culmination of a lifelong struggle with a genetic disease that will find no happy ending. As a friend I can only hope and pray that he will find peace soon surrounded by his parents and sister, and that they can find the love and strength to be there for him and each other, as he takes the final few steps that will be granted him in this life.

And I hope that I can be a good friend to her right now, even at a distance.

Good thoughts and vibrations are still going your way, mini-mart, and also to you, Silja. And, well, anyone who needs them, really.

This is also for a dear friend of mine and her family...yesterday, her brother-in-law was shot in the chest and killed by the ex-boyfriend of a friend of the brother-in-law's daughter. This happened right in front of the 16 year old daughter and her friend. My friend is distraught because she can't travel to be with the rest of her family as soon as she would like to, and of course this is a terrible tragedy for everyone involved.

My friends in general are having a tough time recently. \:\(

Perthalia, just the long, complicated chain of connection that extends all the way out to you shows how terrible this kind of tragedy is. We always think that these kind of murders happen out there at a distance from us, but in reality, they are very close and can happen to any of us, or to someone we care about. Good thoughts and vibrations to you and all your friends in tough times.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I've barely had a minute to post lately but I do try to check this thread regularly and pray accordingly. I hope this post finds many of you doing better.

I have a BIG request: my cousin is having surgery on Thursday. First, a little background: she got Lyme disease in her early teens and had a very bad time of it. Then she developed diabetes and has had a much worse time of it. In recent years she's faced one health problem on top of another; so many I couldn't even convey the details properly. Right now, she's lost her sight because of hemorrhaging in her eyes, and she's had one of her feet in a cast for three years. She has a staph infection with a white blood cell count so high they tested her for leukemia, but it was negative, and they suspect it's gone into her bones. She's now scheduled on Thursday for an amputation. The doctors are going to try to remove only her foot, but since they suspect the bone infection, and can't know for sure what they're going to find until they get in there, there's the possibility they will have to amputate above the knee. I can't bear to think of what will happen if it's worse than they suspect. But they've tried everything they can to avoid amputation and they don't think there's any other option now.

She's 26. She's always been sick, and never had a normal adolescence or young adulthood. I would so appreciate your prayers and GVs that she not lose any more than her foot. She's been through so much and is such a wonderful, gentle person and a talented artist and I just wish her life could be a little easier.

Thank you.

You're in my thoughts and prayers and have been for the last couple of months, as this is something that I can - unfortunately - identify with in too many ways. I wish I had some good news, but not today. The condition of my friend's brother has changed and he has regained consciousness, but he is still in ICU and is now waiting for surgery to alleviate another life-threatening complication. My darling friend and her parents are barely keeping it together, and yet they may have weeks to go before this is over.

Thank you so much to every one of you who has kept the family in your thoughts and prayers. On a personal note: In the last week I have drawn a lot of strength from just knowing that you are out there doing what Chicklirerati do – looking out for each other.

If I may, I'd like to ask for some IPGVs for my grandfather-in-law, who is currently in a nursing home/rehabilitation facility after falling in his driveway and hitting his head. Thankfully his injury was not serious, but he can't safely go home until the balance problems that led to his fall are addressed in physical therapy. Sadly, the problem is compounded by his Alzheimer's - he can't remember falling and doesn't understand why he's in care and why he can't get out of bed unsupervised. It's a pretty stressful situation for all of us, but particularly my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law (who are totally the bee's knees, so I hate seeing them hurt like this). While I know we can't make him whole again because of his disease, I'd like for him to be able to go home and have a few more good years with the people that love him.

I'd like to also request IPGVs for a relative, in this case my grandfather, who has been on a feeding tube after he suffered a stroke last year and lost the ability to swallow. Because of his age (83) and the high sugar content in the feeding-tube formula, he suddenly developed adult onset, Type 2 diabetes, and had to be rushed to the hospital with an extremely high blood sugar level. He's in ICU right now, and we're praying that his kidneys are strong enough that they pull through this, since they're the organs that typically take the brunt of a blood-sugar incident like that.

Thank you so much, everyone, for the support. I don't want to jinx anything, but yesterday my grandfather was moved out of ICU and his doctor says he is improving. His blood sugar is still too high (around 200), but they are continuing to work to bring it down.

The ER staff were amazed, because he was admitted with a blood sugar level of 700, and they said many people die when it reaches 500. But apparently all of his vital signs were strong, and he was talking and joking with the nurses as he was taken to ICU. Hopefully his body didn't take too huge of a beating and he'll be able to recover.

I finally have some good news here. After the botched exploratory surgery on one relative, which necessitated emergency repairs later and meant the other relative had to stay in hospital longer because there was no-one to care for them, both of them went home yesterday.

They're wobbly on their feet, and my parents are helping out a lot, but they're at home and getting better. (And behaving true to form. Him: Don't put your feet on the table. Her: Hold the chicken with a fork when you cut it. My mother: uncontrolled giggling.) Which is all wonderful news.

She is home now, and doing better, but will still be over a month early if they need to induce. While we know that a month is not a huge deal anymore, the longer the baby is able to stay in the womb healthily, the better.

And then I just found out this morning from another good friend that her parents' house burned to the ground last night. Everyone made it out safely with only a couple small burns and smoke inhalation, but they've lost everything. Not only do her parents live there, but her younger brother and grandmother, who suffers from Alzheimer's.

LaSalleUGirl things are going well, thank you. My friend did have her baby three weeks early, but both mother and baby are fine. The little girl is just under six pounds and absolutely adorable.

As for my friend's parents, their insurance will cover everything, and they've made the decision that Grandma should go into a high-end nursing home that caters specifically for those with Alzheimer's. So Grandma is settling in nicely, and my friend's family is on track to get everything rebuilt. The cat that she's had the longest and is the most attached to is, unfortunately, the sickest. Lindsay is a real animal lover and all of her pets are animals that she "rescued" in one way or another. Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Thanks for your kind words, TraceyB, and thanks to anyone else who might have sent some IPGVs my sister's way. After a week of treatment, all of her pets have been given an essentially clean bill of health--although treatment will continue for one more week to be on the safe side. I'm so relieved, but also SO angry that she had to go through this in the first place. Let's hope Menu Foods gets hit with enough lawsuits to bankrupt them, and that other pet food companies take this as a sign to improve their quality control.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I'm double-posting, but it's been a week or so, and this is really important. My younger sister (we'll just call her LaSalleUSister, to protect her privacy) has a long history of mental illness, as does much of the rest of my family. Eight years ago, she spent several months in and out of hospitals during a particularly bad spell. Since then, she'd gotten a lot better, even to the point of holding down a job and starting school again (one of her many diagnoses is social anxiety disorder, so these are real milestones).

Anyway, over the past month or so, she's spiraled back into severe depression, to the point that she left her boyfriend, her job, and her classes to come home (she was in Florida; our family is in Pennsylvania) and check herself into a hospital. It's a great sign that she recognized her own instability and was willing to check herself in -- in the past, she's been remanded to mental health facilities after suicide attempts, so being proactive is truly a good thing.

Her boyfriend (let's call him LaSalleUDeFactoBrother-In-Law), who is a great guy, also has a history of mental illness, and we're concerned that he might become suicidal as well. Right now, he's holding himself together for her sake (his words), but I'm not sure how long that will hold out.

I'm very worried about both of them, obviously, and I'd appreciate any IPGVs people have to spare. Many thanks!

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Thank you all so much for the good vibes -- it really means a lot to me! I just wanted to post an update. I visited my sister on Tuesday (just before heading out of town for a few days). I was thrilled to find her totally lucid and coherent, and seriously self-aware / self-reflective about both the larger situation (she was talking about having emotionally detached herself from her boyfriend a month or so ago, and recognizing that she hasn't felt the full weight of the break-up yet) and about her sojourn in the hospital (she made some totally perceptive comments about her interactions with student-interns in and out of the presence of their supervisors).

Anyway, my point is that she made a rational and well-thought-out decision to seek in-patient treatment as a tool for getting a handle on this situation (rather than as a full-blown crisis situation or a mandated response to a suicide attempt or something), and that strategy seems to have worked. She was discharged yesterday. In the long run, I think she'll be fine.

And her now-ex-boyfriend seems to be doing pretty well, too. I mean, no one is on a completely even keel after a break-up, but he doesn't seem to be spiraling out of control either. In part, he's trying to hold himself together for her sake (he doesn't want her to be worrying about him on top of her own stuff).

Continued good vibes would be helpful, I'm sure, but I'm no longer on the edge of panic.

crumpet2, I'll keep your friend in my thoughts -- I can't even begin to imagine how hard that process of deciding on a treatment plan must be.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Crumpet2, how is your friend doing? I hope she is copping all right. And how is your sister, LaSalleUGirl?

I have a sister request of my own. One of my sisters is in the hospital with hepatitis. It is hepatitis caused by the ingestion of too many drugs. She has for years now taken medication to control her weight, plus medication for depression. Her marriage ended a few years ago partially because of her addiction. But she fooled everyone that she was over it. And we foolishly believed it. We now found out that she has been doing psychoanalysis with two different doctors, just to double the amount of medication she can get from each one, and has at times tampered with the prescriptions to buy even more. Because she has gained weight on the past couple of years, we felt she had stopped with the dieting pills, but this does not seem to be the case either. Apparently she has been buying them over the Internet. My parents, who have been very supportive of her, both emotionally as financially, are crushed.

Sorry for the long post. I needed to vent. Any positive thoughts send on the direction of my sister, my niece and my parents are deeply appreciated.

My friend has had her lymph nodes biopsied now and it's good news! The cancer hadn't spread to them, and they think that with her first surgery they were able to remove all the cancerous cells. From what I can gather she'll still have to have chemo...but I think she can get through it.

crumpet2, that does sound like good news, judging by friends and family who have been suffering through similar diagnosesm, though without getting to hear the welcome news that their lymph nodes are not cancerous.

I just thought I'd post about my cousin, who is undergoing treatment for bone marrow cancer. She called me tonight from an isolation unit, after having her red blood cells taken out to be revitalized in some way and then returned to their rightful owner. For those of you are into visualization, she is seeing 'burgundy' bunnies returning to their burrows, and barn swallows picking off whatever cancerous cells still linger. Works for me. If it works for you as well, please give a moment to visualize this process. Thanks.

My grandfather passed away last weekend (May 6). He was 92 and in failing health but was only really sick for about a week, so it is probably almost the best scenerio anybody could hope for (since we all have to go sometime). Still, I really miss him and I wish he was still with us.

I would like to request IPGVs for my grandma, who was married to him for 60 years, and was only 19 when they met, had a whirlwind courtship, and got hitched a few months later. I think she's going to be OK (she has lots of family support and the small town they live in has been overwhelmingly awesome with the food and the cards and the visits) but every little bit helps, you know?

miercoles, my sympathies and prayers for your grandparents & other family members. It's so stressful for both parts of a couple to be struggling with health issues at the same time.

I have a request: my father's in Emergency with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. My stepmother took him in last night and he was given an ultrasound this morning and they still want to do a CAT scan before proceeding with surgery. My father has chronically high blood pressure and a history of heart problems so this is not completely unprecedented but it's a new issue and from the little I've read online, the threat of this type of aneurysm rupturing is very serious. (If anyone knows more about this condition I would be happy to hear from you.)

I would really appreciate all the IPs and GVs anyone can spare. Thank you so much.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Re

Thank you.

My father came home from the hospital yesterday afternoon. He had all the usual types of heart tests along with two ultrasounds and a CT scan on his abdomen. The internist was generally satisfied with his heart but gave him a newer additional prescription to keep his blood pressure range lower. The lower blood pressure is to protect a slightly enlarged aneurysm which is on his abdominal aorta. He needs to have an ultrasound performed once a year on the aorta for comparison monitoring purposes. The original pain symptoms seem to have disappeared...I quote my father: "Laying on a stretcher for nearly 20 hours will cure anything." Not sure I agree, but it's probably the longest my father's been inactive since his last hospital stay, so I'm sure it helped.

We are all relieved that he is home and does not require surgery at this time. Thank you all for your kind words and support. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers.

deborah, all my best wishes for your father; sorry I missed your original post. It sounds like with the treatment monitoring he will do well. My mother had a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm a few years ago, requiring major surgery. She went to the ER with severe abdominal pain, and luckily they figured out what it was quickly enough to do the surgery and save her life. It ended up requiring taking out a section of colon, but she recovered and has done very well since. But it's a scary and very little-known condition.

Thank you very much for your thoughts.

The ship's doctor has just contacted my family to say that my grandmother has passed away. In many ways it's a blessing - she wouldn't have wanted to suffer - but it's so, so hard. It's the worst thing about being so far away.

At least we can start to deal with things.

I see no one has posted here for a while, which is a good thing, I suppose.

I wanted to thank everyone who gave me IPGVs a few pages back for my cat Paige. Unfortunately, I had to have her put to sleep in early December. It turned out her kidneys weren't really the problem--she had an aggressive, malignant tumor in the back of her mouth, which I guess was throwing off her creatinine levels a little. The tumor grew so fast she was having trouble swallowing, and within a couple of days would have blocked off her airway. The surgeon said if he tried to remove it, it would just grow back. So, I really had no choice but to put her down.

That was a rough one, I have to say. She was such a sweetheart, and she was only five--I expected to have her for at least another ten years. But I'm doing OK now, and I thank everyone again for all their good thoughts.

I hate to need to resurrect this thread, but my friend and her family could use some prayers/good thoughts/miracles/anything you've got. She's got two very sick little boys- a 2 year old with Roto-virus, RSV and pnumonia, and a 10 week old with (just!) RSV and pnumonia. They're going into the hospital today, with the hopes that they'll admit the baby so he has a chance to recover without getting Roto-virus, which would most likely completely devastate his already compromised system.

I'm going crazy with helplessness; seeing as I have a little one of my own, there's not much I can do to help them except gather as many good vibes on their behalf as I can.

I'm writing to ask for IPGVs for my good friend Betsy, who is having a miserable couple of weeks. First, her husband got laid off for the second time in a year. Then, her younger son got diagnosed with Type I diabetes (a problem not just in itself, but also because of the possible loss of health insurance due to the layoff). THEN, she found out that her brother has terminal cancer and was released to hospice care with 3 to 6 months to live. On top of all this, she's supposed to be working on her dissertation, which she needs to finish in order to get a "real" job. (She's a teaching assistant in our graduate program, so she makes slave wages that are barely enough to support a single twenty-something graduate student, and nowhere near enough to support a family of four with a mortgage and car payments.)

Her husband had a promising job interview last week, and expects to hear back in the next few days. I'm hoping against hope that he gets that job at a reasonable salary and that health insurance kicks in soon.

If you can spare some IPGVs for Betsy and her family, I would be very grateful. She was my rock when I was writing my dissertation, and I wish I could do something tangible to help her out in this horrible situation. Since I can't, I'll settle for the intangible :-) Thanks in advance!

So, I'm back. LaSalleUBoy's grandmother is dying. We don't expect her to make it through the week. She is 92, so this isn't an entirely unexpected situation, but her health has declined dramatically over the past two months or so. She is now in hospice care at a nursing home near his parents' house. We visited her today, and she is clearly very weak and does not seem to be aware of her surroundings (in part because of the heavy doses of painkillers they are giving her to make her as comfortable as possible).

If you could spare some IPs and/or GVs for his family, especially his mom, I would deeply appreciate it. I think his mom has been in relative denial until the past few days, and I know she is shaken not just by the thought of losing her mother, but also the fear that her mother is in pain (which she does seem to be, although she is receiving regular doses of the above-mentioned heavy painkillers).

Early on Monday morning, the apartment building where my brother-in-law, Jim, and my nephews were living caught on fire. Jim managed to hoist the boys onto the roof to get away from the smoke until the fire department arrived (the only escape route for second floor tenants was a narrow stairway that had filled with smoke). They got down via a ladder. My mom took them in, since she lives closer. They now have to find a new place to live because the building is being condemned.

The community has been a great support. The folks at my mom's work gave them clothes and other needs the first day. They continue to gather items that Jim and the boys might need. They will also be providing Christmas for them (Jim is a single dad who is really struggling and currently doesn't have a job). My aunt gave them several hundred dollars to help get them into a new place. I'm sure more money is coming.

So, I am here asking for IPGVs for Jim. He is having a really hard time and I worry about how he will manage all of this. He doesn't have much to do with his own family (his father passed away years ago and his mother is a drug addict), so we are all he has, and I worry that's not enough.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for all the IPGVs. Here's a quick update.

Jim still seems to be in shock, but he's making efforts to move on. The biggest cue that he's still in shock: I was sitting at the dining table on Thanksgiving and noticed Jim pacing in the front room with a lit cigarette! This was at my mom's and there is no smoking allowed in the house. He suddenly realized he was smoking in the house and made one of those what-the-hell-am-I-thinking? expressions and dodged out the front door.

The boys are doing fine. I think my youngest nephew summed it up best: "Fire sucks!" He then proceeded to ask when he could eat the cake I made.

It will take Steph time to recover (she'll be in hospital for several days, yet), and there are tests to be done, but as far as there is news, it's positive. So, relief, and continuing good thoughts to Steph and everyone around her...

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Re

Thank you all, and thanks especially to Anne's Friend for updating you here.

I'm home - and so so glad to be home. (The first thing I did - after wandering around saying "I'm home, I'm home!" and washing my hair - was sleep for 10 hours. I had been averaging 3 hours a night in the hospital.)

I want to thank you all for your support and kind wishes, prayers and good vibes in this very stressful time. It has been very difficult but I hope that I am on the road to recovery.
They ended up taking a lot less of the kidney than they had thought, it ended up being less than half, which is great.

I have a follow-up appointment in a couple of weeks with the surgeon to find out the pathology of the mass, whether it was malignant or benign, and what the next steps are from there. (The surgeon assures me it was NOT an alien baby, but then that's just what he WOULD say, isn't it?)

Thank you all again so much for your thoughts and prayers, we all appreciate them so much and I feel very loved and touched to have such good people looking out for me all over the world.

StephA, I'm so glad you're home and (I hope!) well on your way to recovery, and that you've still got more than one and a half kidneys.

As someone who has had to spend some chunks of time bed bound in the hospital, I hear you about the hair washing and the sleep (it is so difficult to sleep in the hospital!).

Good news! The growth was BENIGN! BENIGN, BENIGN, BENIGN!!

I should have a yearly ultrasound and bloodwork to test kidney function (through my family doctor) but otherwise, I can, to quote the surgeon, "go away and live my life". He said this was the "best possible result".

HOORAY!!!

I learned today that a family friend committed suicide late last week. She would have been 20 in August. It's just so terrible and tragic. It was especially hard to watch my parents at tonight's memorial service, because, of course, in addition to our deep sorrow over Leah's death, the whole situation dredged up our still-raw emotions about my sister.

Leah was the only child in her generation, and was doted on not just by her mother, but by her aunt and grandparents. They are all hurting very badly tonight. If you could spare some IPGVs for Lorraine and her family, I would be very grateful.

I feel like I'm always posting in this thread...sigh.

OK, I've got two situations for the Chickliterati IPGV Express.

My sister's boyfriend (Chris), who has mental health issues of his own and was understandably quite devastated by her death, has been dealing with yet another unthinkable challenge. His dad (Rich) has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a terminal and traditionally untreatable form of brain cancer. He has been enrolled in a clinical trial that has shown great promise in mice and rats, so they are hopeful that he'll respond well. I'd greatly appreciate some IPGVs for both of them as they grapple with this whole stressful situation.

Meanwhile, LaSalleUBoy's father probably needs a lung transplant, due to rapidly advancing scar tissue from a bad bout of pneumonia a few years ago. It's gotten to the point where he becomes short of breath at any minor exertion -- he was gasping for air a few weeks ago when he got up to get a glass of water. He was admitted to Temple University's Lung Center tonight because, on top of everything else, his blood pressure spiked today while they were running the transplant evaluation tests. Assuming he gets approved for a transplant, the surgery itself is quite risky, and lungs are apparently more likely to be rejected than almost any other transplant. He's on prayer lists at multiple places, and I know that additional IPGVs would be deeply appreciated by the entire LaSalleUClan.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Re

My father-in-law was taken into surgery late last night. Early this morning, the surgeon told us that the left side of his heart had failed, so they put in a partial artificial heart to oxygenate and pump his blood. The idea is to let his heart recover from the shock of surgery for a few days, and then to give it a chance to resume function on its own again. There were a rough couple of hours this morning where it sounds like things really could have gone either way, but he's more stable now and the surgeon sounds considerably more optimistic than before. The lungs, incidentally, are doing well -- that part of the surgery went exactly as planned, apparently, and the lungs themselves are in really good shape.

So, cautiously good news after a very scary morning. Thank you all so much for your IPGVs! They really do help.

LSUG, that sounds so very scary. I very much hope your FIL's heart is mending well, and I am very glad to hear his lungs are in good shape. Yay, new lung! I'll have all of you in my thoughts.

I had a phone conversation with my step-grandmother yesterday afternoon (thankfully, her stroke did not affect her speech or mental processes!). She is doing well, slowly regaining some function in her right extremities, starting to walk a bit with a walker, etc. And she truly is in good spirits - she sounded so upbeat when we spoke! She told me, "Oh, I'm not despondant or depressed. Crying doesn't do any good!" with a smile in her voice. And she was very touched to hear she was getting IPGVs from people here.

My stepmother has a week or so (until her mom is discharged) to arrange 24-hour caregivers for her mother at home. They don't want her to be home without "supervision" because of the risk of her falling, and because she has some short-term-memory problems that might lead to problems at home when she's not fully recovered. So she's scrambling to put that in place, while recovering from a bad cold.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Re

Thanks for the IPGVs -- it was definitely a comfort to know that so many people were pulling for us during this excruciatingly long weekend. Things got considerably worse after my last post. My father-in-law was basically bleeding out uncontrollably for most of Saturday into Sunday morning. They gave him 120+ units of blood during that time period (to give you a little perspective: people with gunshot wounds to the chest usually receive about 20 units of blood). On Sunday morning, they decided to take him back into the OR to see if they could find the source of the bleeding; they were able to ID and fix it (and it took one freaking stitch to fix -- it boggles my mind how a hole that small could cause such a catastrophic problem!) He started to stabilize after that. They took him back into surgery today to finish closing the chest incision now that some of the swelling had gone down. By the time we left the hospital this evening, he looked visibly better -- less swollen and more normal-colored -- and we only had to wear gloves into the ICU room, rather than the hats/gowns/masks we had to wear for the past two days. The surgeon used the phrases "cautiously optimistic" and "turned a corner" when he was debriefing with our family after the latest surgery, so we are tentatively breathing a sigh of relief. There's still a long road ahead of us, but he's no longer in quite as critical a condition.

CaitlinM, your step-grandmother sounds like she has a great attitude! I'll keeep sending good wishes her way, but I'm sure her own feistiness is also helping things along.

So, the latest news is pretty awful. My father-in-law has pneumonia in one of his new lungs. He has also had a stroke, due to the many clots his body has generated (for not entirely known reasons). There's other bad stuff, too, but the upshot is that he will either fight off the pneumonia in the next 3 to 5 days or he will die. The doctors didn't put it quite that starkly, but pretty close. It's a really miserable situation all around, especially because I have a 12-hour day scheduled tomorrow, including two big-important-waited-months-to-get-on-the-agenda meetings. So the plan is to go to work as usual tomorrow and hope for the best. LaSalleUBoy is in a precarious state to say the least. He's trying so hard to be strong for his mom, but that backfires when he melts down later.

I wanted to follow up on my own request with an update on my stepmother's mother. She has been home about three weeks now, she continues to do well in her outpatient physical therapy. She knows she's not steady on her feet yet, so she's adjusting to having a caregiver around, and it sounds as if they found a couple of really good people.

This isn't an appeal for IPGVs on behalf of myself or someone I know personally, just: the entire country of Haiti and everyone who has loved ones there - especially in and around Port au Prince - need all our IPGVs like nobody's business right now.

All of you who have read Mountains Beyond Mountains know how fragile and unstable the support systems are there in the best of times, and the physical infrastructure in the capital, including the UN Mission, is essentially destroyed. This is a horrendous, horrendous tragedy.

If you have a mobile phone with a major US carrier, if you text the word Haiti to 90999, a $10 donation to the International Red Cross will be charged to your monthly bill and passed on to the IRC. The company that coordinates this giving is not charging the IRC any fees for this.

I'm with you all in sending those IPGVs that way. It seems that, with the exception of a backward few, most of the world is on the same page on this. As frustrating it is that there is organizational chaos, at least there isn't an obstructive government preventing aid, as there was, say, in Myanmar.

The popularity of Mountains Beyond Mountains has the unexpected benefit of making many, many people familiar with the plight of Haiti, even if they, like many of us, have no direct link there.

This thread has been going strong for six years now, and in all that time I have never asked for IPGV's once, not when my father had Alzheimer's and died, or when I had my hyponatremic seizure. But now I am.

I just returned from Tucson, as some of you know, where I was visiting my mother. She has been diagnosed with lung cancer, and although her spirits are great, she's not in pain, and the treatment is very hopeful, I think I need some good vibrations from you all.

This is a woman who survived breast cancer 40 years ago! A few years ago, I did not understand just how powerful collective healing thought and prayer can be. Now I do. For Kitty then. Wish her well. I am so not ready to lose her now. Thank you all.

Delurking to ask for intercessory prayers for my father.

A few days ago he was admitted to hospital with what seemed to be pneumonia, was expecting to spend a few days on antibiotics and was remarking that he felt 'like a fraud' and 'lucky' compared to some of the patients around him. Three days later and he's in the ICU on a ventilator and dialysis and I am powerless to do anything except for asking strangers on the internet for their prayers.

My father is a voracious reader and it's largely through him, I think that I got my love of reading so idea of a group of booklovers sending him their positive thoughts seems somehow appropriate. Of course, he would be highly scornful of the idea of good vibrations and intecessory prayers but then, he's hardly in a position to argue.

Thank you, and my best wishes to everyone else who's had cause to write on this thread.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

If you have thoughts to spare, perhaps you'll have some IPGVs to send my mother's way, as she is having surgery for tongue cancer this week. They'll be removing the malignancy from the underside of her tongue and also taking lymph nodes from both sides of her neck to biopsy, so it's a somewhat major operation (she told me they have slated five hours). She'll no doubt have a rather painful recovery, and she has been told that her speech will be affected post-surgery (she'll be working with a speech therapist).

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Thanks to all four of you. I know my mother finds it helpful to know that people have her healing and well-being in mind.

Her surgery went well. So far, her recovery has included less pain than she anticipated, but the past week wasn't easy because she could only take in thin liquids. Yesterday, she got all her stitches out in both neck and tongue and feels better, as well as being able to eat soft things such as pudding and yogurt. Her pathology report is not as good as we'd hoped because there was a positive biopsy of one lymph node - but only one out of 20 or so they removed. So she'll need radiation, it seems.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I'm looking for some IPGVs for my friend M, whose little sister D checked herself into a psychiatric hospital earlier in the week, but checked herself OUT yesterday even though she isn't "safe" (the term my sister's social workers used). M doesn't know where D is, whether she's on meds (almost definitely not), whether she's physically OK (last time this happened, D was probably sexually assaulted), etc.

All of this stuff is so palpably familiar to me, since my family went through many of the same things with my sister, and those feelings of fear, anxiety, and utter helplessness are just awful. If you have a minute to send some good vibes to M and D, I'd really appreciate it.

I'll send some good thoughts to M and D, along with some hope. My ex's family (and so, me too) also experienced lots of the same with my sister-in-law, and I know how difficult and worrying it is for those who care for the one who's suffering and at risk.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I'm glad this thread has been quiet for so long and that I only have a minor request.

I had to take my dog Iggy to the vet today because he was acting like he had a stomach problem even though he wasn't throwing up and he was going to the bathroom normally. Turns out he slipped a disc in his back. He's on doggy bed rest for six weeks and has a lot of medication to take. The vet says I got him in early and, with the proper care, will likely be able to help it heal. If it gets worse though, he could suffer nerve damage that could paralyze his hind legs. Here's hoping for the best for the poor little guy.

Thanks Caitlin and Tracey. So far he's doing really well. The prednisone has made him rather plump, but I'm weaning him off that this week. I think he's going to recover. He has another month of taking it easy, then he's starting a fitness routine of running with me while I bike.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Sad that I'm the last one to post a health problem. This one is a bit more serious. My dad had a second heart attack last night. He had an angiogram today and the doctor decided he needs quadruple bypass. He goes in for surgery tomorrow morning. I'm optimistic about the surgery. My concern is that he won't be able to quit smoking. It's the cause of both heart attacks. He smokes so much he's also developed COPD. So I'm looking for good vibes to help my dad to quit smoking so that I can have him around a while longer. He's only 57.

The bypass went well. He had some trouble breathing after due to emphysema (not COPD, like he insists), making that night scary. They got him stabilized and he's doing fine now.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

grapevyne, how are you and your sons holding up? I've been thinking of you.

My friend KG's husband died today after a long battle with cancer. I didn't know him well, but I really enjoyed the handful of times I did hang out with him, and I love the stories she tells about him (our husbands are often the basis of the anecdotes we swap over coffee). He was, in KG's words, "a tough little fuck," and he really fought it out until the end. She is as stoic as ever, but I wish there were something I could do for her. I'd be grateful for any good vibes or prayers you could send her way.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I am sorry to hear about your friend's husband. The one thing you can do for her is listen to her talk about her husband and his death for as long as she wants. I was given a good piece of advice when my son died: Never stop talking about him.

I am doing ok. Moving on with life is hard, but I'm back to work. Last night I was finally able to pick up a book and read again. I do not have the concentration level yet for fiction, but memoirs are working for me.

I'm still worried about my oldest son. He lives in the other corner of the state. My youngest son and I are surrounded by family and a town who watched all three of them grow up. Depression can be harder to fight off when isolated.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

It occurred to me just now that I need to make this thread a watched topic, as I had completely missed your post, grapevine. My IPGVs go out to not only your sons but to you and all the web of people who must be affected by your son's death. That is a hard, hard thing.

LaSalleUGirl, it's funny how much our friend's husbands can be a factor in our lives, and how many good memories we can have of them. I hope you can share yours with your friend as she is able to hear them. One of my friend's who was a widow very young told me that one time when it really helps to show up for a friend is six months after the death, when everyone else has 'moved on', but they haven't. IPGVs to KG and you as well. Cancer sucks.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

grapevyne, that is truly excellent advice. My sister committed suicide in 2007. My family talks about her constantly and finds ways to incorporate her memory into our lives. We still hang her Christmas ornaments each year, and we're about to celebrate her birthday with her favorite carrot cake later this week. I think there are probably people I've met more recently who have no idea that my sister is dead, because I talk about her and our shared childhood so regularly. I can't imagine how much worse it would feel NOT to talk about her.

I'll be thinking of you and your family.

Thanks for the IPGVs!

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I may be sending this thought into the void, by the dates since anyone has posted. I feel guilty for my part in not participating in conversation enough; life has gotten busy and I have neglected friends until I need them.
Since the death of my son I have also lost a brother-in-law to cancer, he was 26, my boyfriend's brother who was 56, and now my brother has suddenly died at the age of 46. I have to wonder how much a family can take. I asked my boyfriend, who has lost all but one sister in his immediate family, if your heart ever feels like it can't take any more. He replied "yes, but then something comes along to give you hope." He pointed to my new nieces and nephews and said that they are the hope.
I am sending this thought out to everybody who has lost too many loved ones, find a baby, new friend, adopted grandparent, somebody to hug; these connections are our hope.
Or, maybe I should call this my last glass of wine and go to bed.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

I don't know what made me come and look to see whether the forum was still as moribund as it had become a few years ago, but when I saw your message of less than a month ago, grapevyne, I logged in. If you happen to check back, I am so sorry for all the losses in your and your boyfriend's life. That must be devastating. And I don't think your thought applies only to people who've lost many, just to suggest that none of us should take the importance of making connections for granted.

Please accept a virtual hug in the form of loving good vibes sent your way, for both of you.

Re: The Intercessory Prayer and Good Vibrations Request Thread

Grapevyne and CaitlynM2, I just got some email that there had been some activity here. The website may be a bit moribund, but I don't think the feelings and wellwishing from various members ever turns off. I am glad you checked in, Grapevyne, and although I cant' and wouldn't wish to compare myself to your catalog of loss, I do feel like there have been periods in my life where everywhere I turn there is calamity and grief. It would be trite and callous to say that 'it gets better', but I will say that our own perspective changes. I hope that just checking in here is helpful, but if there's anything else I can do, please let me know. Keep on hanging in there. I know it's easy to say, but please do anyway.
