Going to Rome next week, what should I be reading?

Also any recommendations for Caribbean based novels.

Not sure what type of novel interests you most, or what part of the Caribbean, but here are a few:

When I was Puerto Rican - Esmeralda Santiago
In the Time of the Butterflies - Julia Alvarez
Wide Sargasso Sea - Jean Rhys
Annie John - Jamaica Kincaid
Don't Stop the Carnival - Herman Wouk (very dated, but very funny)
Tar Baby - Toni Morrison

I'm going to move this thread to the Geography & History forum, where you might also find recommendations about places you're going (I know there's one about things to do in Rome).

Have a great trip!

lipgloss, are you me? Because I'm going to Rome next week, too.

If you can get your hands on Gourmet magazine's special Rome issue from this past spring, I highly recommend reading that. It's chock-full of swoon-inducing ideas for what to do in Rome.

If you're interested in ancient rome then I recommend The Roman Way by Edith Hamilton. For renaissance I would go with The Civilization of the Renaissance in Italy by Jacob Burckhardt. And I cannot recommend Rick Steves' Rome highly enough. Best guidebook ever.

Also, I might be going to Paris soon. Any suggestions?

buildwithlego , I have 2 books for you.

Olympia, Paris in the Age of Manet, by Otto Friedrich. I was in Paris a year ago, and I felt completely in love with the Musee D\'Orsay . A friend then suggested I read this book, and I really whish I had read it before going, because it would had been even more special if I had know a lot of the gossip and historical background on many of the art work there. (Olympia, the nude picture that caused so much controversy in the 1860's is exposed there).

Versailles: A Novel , by Kathryn Davis is another book that was recommended to me after my trip, and that I thought I should had read before my trip (I actually never got around to reading it, but I still may do it - I also loved Versailles).

Now, another suggestion for you, try to go to the Musee Rodin , which is not as busy as some of the other museums, but is absolutely beautiful (are you going with a partner? – Rodin’s pieces are so sensual). I can't remember for sure, but I think Otto Friedrich also has a tidbit of information about Rodin in his book. Or maybe I read it somewhere else. But the story goes that some of his male nudes were so perfect, he was accused of making casts of his models and just pouring the metal in.

I'm going to spend 10 days in Tuscany (rented a house near Siena) in June 04, so I have time to do a lot of reading. I need recommendations for books set in Tuscany--no Frannie Mayes please. Books on food, travel, history, or novels set in Tuscany--all will be appreciated.

I'm to travel to London in March, and will have a winter break in a few weeks and will have time to read a few things about it, if anyone would care to recommend any books.
