This isn't really a brag, but this is the only place I know of to share this information and you guys are the only people who will understand my awe.

After discussion with a relative who I haven't seen in years, I learned that I AM RELATED SOMEWHAT TO JOY HARJO!!!!

I say somewhat because she's my cousin's grandmother (or you could say my uncle's mother).

Is that cool or what?

(I'm certain that this is some sort of cosmic payoff from spending years hoping that I'm adopted and my birth mother is Margaret Atwood.)

This isn't even my own brag, but I'm impressed with my husband at the moment about it: he just got a poem accepted to a very good Canadian journal, and they are paying him an actual money! At least, enough for a nice dinner out for the two of us. The most he ever got before was a 5 cheque from a British publication, which wasn't even worth cashing because of the exchange fee. Of course, he doesn't write for filthy lucre, but it does make the acceptance seem extra real to get actual money for it.

Well, I'm chuffed, because I got my First Real English Teaching Position... I'll be teaching 2 parts of an English Comp class at (don't laugh) National University. It's a start. And you can bet when the Instructor's Manual came addressed to "Professor MyLastName," I freaked, and doinged out all over the UPS delivery person....

So I'm putting together my first class syllabus. And if anyone has any helpful teaching/comp suggestions, of course, please feel free to e-mail me....

p.s. Weetabix, can you please invite me to your next family reunion? Joy is a goddess!

saskatchewan, thanks for asking! It's Descant--I wasn't familiar with it, but it looks like a "real" journal and all. I'm not sure which issue it will be in, though.

Descant is both well-read and well-respected. It's a good journal and it looks very attractive too.

Very nice job!

I MET DAVID SEDARIS!

Yes, I spent an hour with him yesterday afternoon drinking tea and smoking lots of cigarettes and talking about the many different ways in which the Germans use the word 'shit'. Among other things (like the fact that apparently, while a brilliant writer, Dave Eggers is a total arsehole). Anyway, it was one of the most enjoyable interviews I've ever done, he was so great. And yes, Sars, your book is signed!
