If you're really not sure about where to post a new topic, you can ask about it here and we will give you some direction.

Hello deborah,

I wanted to suggest a link for the "Literary Issues, Charitable Activities, etc" section... but I wasn't really sure where to post...and I know that you've said that you have boatloads of emails to wade through, so I didn't want to make it worse... aw shucks, here's the link:

www.booksforsoldiers.com

Please let me know (or feel free to delete this) if I should have put it elsewhere... apologies in advance.

strwybrygal, we have an Announcements forum here for that sort of thing. I think a general Request for Books (or Book Donations) thread would be a good thing to have there.

Hey, strwybrygal. Thanks for your post!

As FishDreamer said, we'll look into creating a new general thread for book donations or similar, but I wanted to let you know that there is a thread in the Announcements section about the booksforsoldiers Web site. (The thread is called Books For Soldiers.)

Any advice as to where to post requests for "Is this play worth spending money on?" would be appreciated. I looked thru' the "Culture High & Low" forum and nothing seemed entirely appropriate.
Thanks in advance.

Fastiller, I think you could post in the "Favorite Plays" thread asking if anyone has seen the play you're interested in and whether they liked it. I'd do that unless one of the moderators for that forum posts here and says something different.

Where can I post questions about abbreviations that seem to be used in lots of posts, but which I am ignorant of because I just recently discovered the whole concept of online forums, etc?

For example, does ETA mean "edited to add"? I JUST figured that one out, after staring at several posts that used it, desperate for context clues...

Here is the thread on Netspeak. You could ask questions there.

There's also a thread here that talks about conventions and usage here on Chicklit and other sites.

My first impulse is Culture High and Low -- maybe we need a new thread on great public spaces/buildings or something?

Well, I suppose you can head for Good Libraries Gone Bad .

On the other hand, I get the feeling you're interested in discussing the architecture, I don't think we have an architecture discussion going on in Culture High and Low, where one would discuss art and architecture, or as voiceofreason said above, public spaces/buildings. So that might be a good one to start!

I'm interested in creating a thread based on an idea of Toni Morrison's - namely, that white authors have always used black (or "other" races) in their writing, even when they were not aware of it themselves. I've looked for, but haven't found a similar thread - just wanted to check and make sure there wasn't already one somewhere. Oh, and find out exactly where I should post this idea. Thank you.

I'm thinking I might start a "reference question" thread.

This is spurred by the fact that I've at long last decided to name my beloved car, which recently survived a brush with death. I'd like to name it after a literary or mythological character which also survived a brush with death, but I can't think of any.

Not wanting start a new topic for such a specific question, I thought I might expand it into a general reference question thing. I ran searches for "question" and "reference" and didn't find anything similar.

Would this be useful, and if so, where should I put it?

We have a general reference thread that is stickied at the top of the reference section. It's called "I need ____! And quickly, too." I think that thread would work for you, but if you feel it doesn't, we can debate the issue.

Hi, I'm looking for a thread in which I can ask for CD/music recommendations (its pretty specific - I want motivational music so I'll get off my arse and study, but I dont want preppy, smiley Tony Robbins type crap). The closest thread I have found is the "what cd is in your player?" one, but that isn't quite right.

Thanks in advance!

Where should I post about S.E. Hinton's new book? No opinion or anything, just an announcement that I saw Yahoo!'s homepage, I guess. I'm sure there's probably a New Books Coming Out-type thread that I've forgotten about or just never seen.

Joss--we had a topic in the Bookworm called "I can't wait to read this!" but it has disappeared. We do have What books are you dying to read/or buy and what\'s stopping you? which might work as a place to shout your excitement. I don't think we actually do have a New Books Coming-Out type thread...as far as I can recall that is. I'd like to search more first and perhaps start a topic, but in the meantime, I've bumped the other for you.

I think there is a thread like that. I'll have a look to see what I can find.

There's this.

And this.

Neither of those is very specific, but it's a place to start. There might be another, better thread, and I trust that someone will post saying so if there is.

Is there a topic addressing perceptions of women and weight? I know it's been mentioned recently in the prejudice thread, but I was curious if there was something devoted more specifically to image as it relates to weight.

I just read an article on MSNBC about the women's artistic gymnastics all-around, and it made derogatory comments about the size of the gold and silver medal winners. I'm sorry, Mr. Writer Fellow, but I'd totally bet that Carly Patterson's thighs, which you called 'big', are smaller than yours.

Edited because I caught Lost Comma Syndrome from Selena.

Ainsley, we don't have a topic that deals specifically with weight issues. It's an interesting topic, and certainly deserves its own thread. If you want to look at the personal issues that surround weight, it should go in Body & Soul. However, if you want to explore how women's bodies are portrayed in the news media, News & Views is the place for you.

Edited because I forgot about the Culture thread, which works if you want to focus on widespread media portrayal.

oops... sorry. She's in a ... beauty pagent. Miss South Africa. ok, i know that doesn't sound so great, but she's not in it for the superficiality of it all. She found herself as a finalist by mistake, and decided to run with it. If it helps she's decided that her project for the year, should she win, will be to promote literacy and she'd like to have Zifundele as her charity, so that's relevant to Chicklit, right? \:D and her other focus is going to be maths and science education for girl children (she's an electrical engineer, currently doing her Master's degree at age 22).
All I'd like people to do is to vote for her as the most likely to win, just to boost her confidence. She's a wonderful person, but I think she's still reeling from the 3-day beauty-queen-boot-camp she had a couple of weeks ago, where she suddenly found herself with people who've made entering and winning beauty competitions their life's ambitions.
that enough info? \:\)

blueberry - How about in the Getting the Universe to Help You with Your Goals thread I started last week in Body & Soul? I think that might cover your needs. Sure I know it's your friend's goal not yours but meh, it should still illicit good vibes. If that doesn't work we'll try another strategy.

Make sure you specify how people can help - i.e. who gets to vote and how they should go about it.

I've just come across a post on an expat message board, from someone who is starting up a publication based around expat experiences. He's looking for people who are interested in writing either non-fiction or fiction pieces for the magazine. I asked if he would mind me posting his message on other boards, and he's happy for me to do that as he's trying to drum up lots of interest.

So, is it allowed for me to do that, and if so, where would the most appropriate section be?

I'd really love to post a topic asking about any other dyslexic members and their experiences with the combination, but I'm unsure where such a thread would suit, and really don't want to make a mistake.
Is it generally considered polite to have made a fair few posts before starting a topic? I've only made a few posts, and am just learning the ropes.
Where might you suggest?

Hi CatrionaGrey, you can post about dyslexia in Body & Soul if you like. Make sure your subject line is clear so you get more response.

We don't have a rule about how many posts you should have before starting a topic but we like you to get a feel for the site by reading a few forums/threads before you start posting/adding topic. Go ahead and start your topic and don't worry too much about it!

CatrionaGrey - I'm glad you like my user name, I'm rather fond of it myself \:\) . Go ahead and post in Body&Soul and if your thread seems like it might get more traffic elsewhere, I'll move it.

Don't be nervous, we hardly ever eat new posters anymore, too hard on the digestion.

In the top right hand corner of the forum pages, there is a drop-down menu that allows you to show threads from the last day, five days, 30 days, etc, all the way up to all threads. If you can't find the thread, you probably need to expand the number of topics you are seeing. I will bump the thread for you.

ETA: I don't see a chocolate thread. Are you sure that's what you're looking for? There's a sweets to the sweet thread that is perhaps what you are looking for. That, or one of the House and Home mods will pop by here and help you out.

yes, sweets for the sweet. That's what it's called. I'm seeing everything through a chocolate haze right now, hence my inability to remember the proper thread name. \:D I'll try the threads view thing. Thanks Ria

Hi, me again. \:D I'm thinking that I need to figure out how to search for threads properly on my own (there must be something wrong with my current method, or I'd find appropriate threads more often!), cos I'm always posting in here.

Is there a thread where you can discuss novels you're reading at the moment, and get other Chickliterati's analyses of them? Not specific novels, like the book of the month, just a general discussion type place. I figure there'd be major overload if everyone started a fresh thread for each book they read.

I'm re-reading Jane Eyre for the first time after about 10 years and came accross some interesting comments in the Joyce Carol Oates introduction that I'd like to canvass some opinion on.

Thanks...

I've searched around but wasn't quite sure where to put this- I'm trying to find information (or ideas for where I can find information) about the origins of the idiom "Heaven helps him who helps himself". Would it go in Quotables, or How did this word ever develop, or someplace different all together?
Thanks!

In Ria's absence (since I'm pretty sure it's past her bedtime), I suggest either How did this word ever develop? or Help with local words/phrases .

My inclination is to the words/phrases thread, given the discussion that's gone on there so far and that I think of that phrase as a colloquialism. If any other moderators want to chime in, please do. But I think either would work for what you need, Frannie Glass.

I'm not sure if there's a thread somewhere on this, or where to post it, but I'm looking for advice on how to take care of old/antique books. I have a good number of them, some from turn of the century, and the covers, pages, etc. are quite brittle for some of them. I think perhaps I need to do something about preserving them. I have a beautiful oversized copy of Dante's Inferno from early 1900s, for example, and it just seems tragic to let it rot away. Any tips or links to sites that might explain how to preserve your older books?

Hi all, I'm hoping someone around here has some insight on the process buyers at large stores (Barnes and Noble etc.) use to decide what books to bring in. I'm putting together a proposal to do some marketing for an independent comic company, and getting books into those stores will be part of the job, but I have no idea what I'm talking about. And no idea where to post this question. =) Thanks!

Is there a good place to announce word-geek stuff that isn't actually a book, and wasn't made (directly) by me?

Visual Thesaurus (which has been mentioned in a couple of places in this board) version 3.0 just came out, and it's pretty cool. I'm guessing that some people here will be excited about this, but I hesitate to post because I'm not sure where to put it.

I also hesitate to post because I work for the company, and don't want to be flogging something if it's inappropriate. If any of you moderator folks feel this is unethical, please tell me and I'll be happy to go so far as to edit this post down to nothingness.

Pageturner, is it a website or piece of software? If it's a website, there are some threads about cool websits and additions to the library in the Resources and Reference section. Make sure you choose "view all topics" if you go looking for a place to post about it. If it's software, there's probably room for a software or applications thread in Nuts and Bolts (if there isn't one already).

voiceofreason: Oh. Right. Thanks for reminding me. Yeah, that would work perfectly, wouldn't it?

Ria: It's both a website and a piece of software. It all depends on whether you want to buy a CD copy or get a subscription to the website. Makes it a wee bit hard to categorize.

I guess one of the reasons I hesitated is that it is a commercial product, but it's such a cool, small company and it's such a wonderful wordy product that I just want to run around and tell everyone.

Where should I post a topic about feminism and Russian culture? I hang out on Russian bulletin boards, and everyone hates me there because of my suggestions that maybe a husband and wife should prepare dinner together or take turns. People basically turn to insults, accusing me of looking down on Russia (huh?!) and predicting that I'll never hold onto a man like this. I am wondering what's a good way to get my point across without offending anyone. Where would such a topic go?

I think there is probably room for a general thread about gender identities and culture in the Culture area. Possibly one of the moderators for that area will come chime in here and let me know if there's a pre-existing thread I've not thought of.

Mashenka, if you'd like to start a thread on gender identity and how it's formed by culture, News & Views would be the place to do it. And you could title it "Gender Identity and Culture."

As I didn't know about your question here, you can see how the subject was not clear. It read to me like you were solely asking for assistance in dealing with issues on another forum. If you make your discussion less about the other board and more on the subject of the vast differences between women in different countries/cultures, that might work a little better for you.

I would e-mail these suggestions to you, but your e-mail is not available in your profile. If you would like to discuss this further, please feel free to e-mail me.

I was wondering where to put a thread about bookstores. Specifically, sort of a "My Favorite Bookstores in _____". I realized there was already a thread about this, or that it either could sort of go in Back and Forthl (i.e. I'm going to _____, can you recommend a bookstore?), or it could go in a more about books section.

Thanks!

Is there a topic on naming your pets? I saw one for fish names, but not a general one. If not, could we open one and where should it go? This would cover how people have picked names, asking for suggestions, how did your pet get its funny name, etc.

There's also a dog thread , and the neurotic cat thread . If what you're looking for falls into the categories of dogs, cats, or fish, then any of those would work. If not, then feel free to start a more general thread about naming your pets.

Also take a look at Powerful Women in Literature , which is in essence a thread about naming your pet after characters in books.

ETA, it would go in Love & War , where all pet threads go.

find that as I am reading sometime (despite the dictionary on the nightstand and the one on my desk, etc) I come across a word that I don't know. Is there a thread where we could ask about the meanings of words/phrases or other assorted things we run across in books? I figure someone must know what they are, even if it's silly to be asking or I wind up embarrassed that I didn't have it figured out.

One thread that I often find useful for that sort of thing is Help with local words and phrases -- it's aimed mostly at regional differences, and that's probably the kind of stuff I find the dictionary to be the most unhelpful on.

I would like to ask a question about/confirm the existence of a book Osar Wilde was supposed to have left to be published in 1960. Where should I ask that question, since it's not a quote or anything? Thanks.

I didn't quite think they fell into the "Children's Literature" category and so was hesitant to post in there, but since there's been a whole discussion on them already.... Thanks, GingerCat.

Auroranorth, there are several candidates for you:

Is there censorship in the media?
Politics and publishing , which isn't media-specific but might apply
Homophobia and the media
misogyny in the media

If none of these are broad enough to cover what you're looking for, then you could start a new topic. If you think your post could fall loosely in one of those, then go ahead and post in that one. There's also News & Politics: Election Coverage (USA) , but that was fairly specific.

I need some recommendations for where to take or send a book for restoration and repair.
The closest topic I found was The Chemistry of Books in Nuts & Bolts... but that might be too technical. I just want to find someone to do it for me. If not there, where should I put the topic?

I mentioned two books in the 'what are you reading?' thread that I'm not reading yet, but will when I travel in a few weeks, and that got me thinking about airplane books, which I think have specific requirements (compelling enough to get you through the delayed takeoff and the long-haul flight, but disposable at the other end, for a start). I searched on 'airplane books' and 'airplane reading' and couldn't see anything - can anyone help?

thinking about......a thread about the fun of introducing kids (your's of whoever's)to great books, but don't want to be redundant or icky sweet about it. Do we have that? Would it be horrid to start it? I've been suffering somewhat lately for hooking my 11 yr old son on T H White's The Once and Future King. Good book he needs to read-hell everyone should, but some guilt about 11 yr olds. Then again if he watched cable all day.......

Hmmm, that's a good question kbean. Give me some time to do a bit of searching, and if I don't find a thread, go right ahead, it's a good idea if it's not been done already. I know we've had a couple of recommendations for kids threads, but I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for.

I'll get back to you in the morning (Seattle time).

I have a kinda technical question and I have no idea where to post it, so I figured here was ok. I am about to embark on a large book that is actually 5 different books (same author) republished as 1 book with 1 title. For the self-serving purpose of counting how many books I read, is this 1 book or 5?

The book, btw, is divided into 5 sections, each section being one whole book (not excerpts).

concertoinv, I would personally count that as five separate books, on the grounds that they were originally published in that way. I think I've read trilogies where that was done and didn't feel that a mere act of a publisher could change the fact that these were originally discrete entities!

A question of my own: for my thesis I need to find modern feminist theories about the difference between biological sex and socially-constructed gender. Things along the lines of Judith Butler, though she isn't quite what I'm looking for. Is there any appropriate thread to ask this in? (ETA: just did a search for Judith Butler and found nothing of use.)

Where would I post about literary prerequisites? You know how when you read a book you find that the author refers to, names or pays homage to other authors and books? Do other people notice this? Do you feel like you miss out because you haven't read the books referenced? Do you know of reading prerequisites for a book you've read? Am I just a nut? Wait! Don't answer that one.

Excuse me, I've got a great Literature - inspired game to talk about - where do I go?

Simply this:

I've found that quite a few of us know Little Women by Louisa May Alcott, and I imagine they'll know about the rigmarole game Kate Vaughn taught them to play. I was thinking we could play that too.

Is there a thread somewhere for asking questions about different religions? I ask because I saw an advertisement today advertising "Shari'ah-based banking solutions", and was curious as to what that would entail. Then I thought, if there isn't one already, why not start a thread where people can ask questions about aspects of various religions? Possibly those people who have the answers to the questions could also suggest good books or websites for further reference?

Here's one -- do we have a topic anywhere that would be suitable for the discussion of blurbs? Blurb writing, good blurbs, bad blurbs, and so on.

I'm having trouble with the search function -- it will only let me do one forum at a time today -- but I don't think I've found anything.

I searched, and couldn't find anything like that. We had one on acknowledgements awhile back, but nothing about blurbs. I've always thought those little quotes fell under the definition of blurb. In any case, it would make a good Bookworm discussion. If I were feeling more creative, I'd start the topic myself. Go for it. Libby, you and Prim will have to draw straws or something to see who starts it...

Hi! I'm new here, and came in because I saw a thread on the Peter Wimsey books.
Two Questions:1. Where can I find that thread again?
I wanted to post a reply to Priscilla who couldn't find a copy of Gaudy Night. Someone may have already told her, but at abebooks.com, one can find almost any book. I checked a few minutes ago, and there are 290 entries for Gaudy Night, ranging from many $1.00 copies to an $848.00 signed first edition, first printing. If anyone wants to find an old book, abebooks is the place to go. I like to use it to find decent quality hardbacks to replace my favorite ratty, loved-to-death paperbacks. But be warned. It's addictive.

Hi Verity! Welcome to Chicklit.

I bumped up that Wimsey topic for you (it had dropped to the second page of the Bookworm topics). It's called As My Wimsey Takes Me .

Is your user name a reference to To Say Nothing of the Dog, by any chance?

Do we have a thread to talk about methods of storing books and safeguarding them from insects, fungus, and so on? If not, may I start one, please? I just need to know where to put the post. I have an urgent problem with cannibalistic old books!

There's also one called "Book group needs help," if it's still around. I'll see if I can find it and bump it.

Where can I talk about the new British film version of Jane Eyre, which just aired on U.S. TV as part of Masterpiece Theatre? It's books, it's TV, it's movies, it's everything!

Erin W, I would suggest the Now Playing (The Chicklit Movie Review Thread) . People have definitely discussed TV movies / miniseries on that thread before.

If you hated the new version of Jane Eyre, you could try the When Good Books Become Bad Movies thread. We don't seem to have a thread for when good books become good movies (rare though that may be). Maybe we need something like that?

Hope that helps!

There are "Books that Become Movies" and "TV Adaptations" threads in the Bookworm. I just bumped both of them--sorry if that's obnoxious; I just didn't know which might be better!

We don't actually use signatures here, ElleFCee. I don't see one in your post, so I'm not sure what you meant. Graphics and icons are not allowed and thus turned off, so maybe that's what you meant?

Hello,

I am wondering where can I post info on diaries? These are not your typical diaires, more like, "raw", "in your face" chicklit. Also, why do some literary agents not want to push the envelope when it comes to certain writing styles?

Hi Adler -- welcome to Chicklit. I can't tell for sure from your post whether you're talking about fictional diaries or non-fictional ones, but we have threads for both:
Fictional Diaries
The Journals Threads (I don't see any threads specifically about getting journals published, but there may be discussions about that in individual threads.)

I've been asked to give a talk on self-defense for my housemates(about 40 women.) I'm curious as to what topics would be interesting for others to hear about- I've done a fair amount of studying and things that are automatic for me aren't necessarily something that someone else would think of. Where should I ask for suggestions?

Is there a topic about gift ideas for children? The closest I could find was The Best (and Worst) in Gifts in Love & War.
Could I start a topic specific to gift suggestions for children?

I feel like we had a thread somewhere to ask for gift suggestions but maybe I'm imagining that. I don't mind starting one, but I'd like it to be a thread for gift suggestions generally, rather than one just for children's gifts. You can always make your post inside a topic relatively specific and people will address your concerns. So please go ahead and start a topic on gift suggestions.

Thanks.

I've noticed a few people mentioning disappointment in the endings of books they've read lately, and I've had that experience myself (two this month). Is there a thread devoted to discussing disappointing endings of otherwise great or good books?

ETA: Just wanted to add that I do know there's a Disappointing Books thread, but it seems to discuss books that were overall very disappointing. I wasn't sure whether it was ok to veer it slightly to cover books that you loved/liked... up until the last 30 pages.

We had a thread where there was discussion of making (for example) purses out of used/unwanted books, but I can't find it either. Try searching for "books" on Chicklit - it's not going to work, is it?

I'll keep looking, but the thread might have been purged.

not a geordie, there's a thread called "Authors: Announce your new books/zines/websites/other projects here" in the Announcements, Questions, Miscellaneous Commentary area where you can post this annoucement.

Thanks for asking.

Let's say I have a question about how to pronounce an author's name properly. Do we have a thread where that would be even remotely on topic? It seems silly to start one for such a random question...

I totally approve. Maybe it could be called something like "How to say anything". Not sure how we'd tell each other how to pronounce things, but there are a lot of things that people feel unsure how to say,not just authors.
