Happy Birthday, Deborah! I'll bring a big chocolate cake and some magic fairy dust that'll allow Deborah to eat as much of it as she wants.

Many belated thanks to everyone for the good wishes! And if anyone figures out how to implement VegetarianOnHiatus's idea for a gift, I'm all ears.

I thought you might like to peruse the wonderful haul of books I got for my birthday:

Mountains Beyond Mountains: Healing the World: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer by Tracy Kidder

Speaking in God's Name: Islamic Law, Authority and Women by Khaled Abou El Fadl

Upside Down: A Primer for the Looking-Glass World by Eduardo Galeano

Spoken Here: Travels Among Threatened Languages by Mark Abley

Karl Blossfeldt (a fabulous photography book by Taschen)

Writer's Digest Handbook Of Magazine Article Writing by Michelle Ruberg

Better Off: Flipping the Switch on Technology by Eric Brende

The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn by Diane Ravitch

Conference of the Books: The Search for Beauty in Islam by Khaled Abou el Fadl

First Among Sufis: The Life and Thought of Rabia al-Adawiyya, the Woman Saint of Basra by Widad El Sakkakini

Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir

The Essential Rumi (new expanded edition) translated by Coleman Barks

I think that's all of them! I got lots of other wonderful stuff too (clothes, jewellery, music, etc., but I know y'all are most interested in the books).

And I had a really wonderful birthday, with an awesome party. I hope to get around to writing a journal entry about it, but in the all-too-likely event that I don't, I thought you might like to see pictures of my cake:

Cake 2

The woman who made my cake is a genius.

That is absolutely the coolest cake ever. I so want a scrabble cake for my next birthday.

Happy belated birthday, and hope it was a good one (which it was, judging from the book list).

That's a very cool cake, Deborah! I have a soft spot for Scrabble now, because my husband proposed to me by playing "Will you marry me" during a game.
