Thanks to CaitlinM for pointing out that "Sweat" is actually our JULY selection!

I don't know what it's like in your neck of the woods today, but here in sticky, humid Philadelphia, it's the perfect day to announce our JULY selection, Zora Neale Hurston's short story "Sweat." Be aware that Hurston writes in dialect (honed by her years of gathering oral histories and folklore as a Barnard/Columbia-trained anthropologist) and uses words that some people might consider offensive.

Like many of Hurston's works, "Sweat" explores the dynamics of an intimate relationship, and particularly how women respond to abuse.

Discussion begins on JULY 15. Happy reading!

*bump* Discussion of "Sweat" begins on July 15. For those of us in North America, Hurston's short story is a pretty apt description of our condition lately...

Incidentally, my security software blocked the link above as a malicious site. I did find an online version of "Sweat" here, in Google Books. That will probably only work if you are in the US, though.

Thanks for pointing that out, CaitlinM. That's definitely not good.

Discussion opens today, and I encourage you to have at it. I have just spent 16 hours doing a massive workday at LaSalleUBoy's childhood home to prep it for sale, and I'm not feeling very coherent right now. I will try to post for real tomorrow as I speed my way north to New England for a much-needed vacation (and on Acela, so I'll have wifi and everything!).
